It is reported that Paul Johnson, the US citizen kidnapped in Saudi Arabia, has been shown on video. He appears blindfolded, giving his name. The video has been shown on CNN apparently.

A masked man armed with an automatic weapon also spoke on the video, identifying himself as Abdul Aziz al-Muqrin, the self-proclaimed military leader of al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia. His identity has not been independently verified.
The masked man, speaking on behalf of a group called the Falluja Squadron that claims to have ties to al Qaeda, demanded that Saudi Arabia free al Qaeda prisoners it was holding and that Westerners leave the Arabian Peninsula. If the demands aren’t met within 72 hours, Johnson will be killed, the militant said.
The gunman also claimed that at the time of Johnson’s kidnapping, one of the American’s colleagues was killed. On Saturday, when Johnson went missing in Riyadh, another American, Kenneth Scroggs, was found slain.
Update: It appears Paul Johnson has been beheaded. CNN are saying that three photographs appear on an Islamist website depicting Johnson’s decapitated corpse.

I live in Saudi Arabia, have have not had a problem with the quality of life here until just recently. We (the americans and british here) live on a pretty secure compound and have never had a problem in this area. That’s not to say that nothing will ever happen, but I don’t think that people can comment on something they’ll never experience. And it is an experience living over here. Most all of the Saudi’s that we have come in contact with are as decent as most all other people. It is the few that ruin it for the many, just like in the states.

When I look at the last four presidents, I see Clinton as the weakest by far in matters of foreign policy. George bush was in office for 9 months when September 11th went down. Clinton had years to deal with Al-Qaida. Honestly, I was a democrat & Clinton supporter prior to 9/11. I now see his presidency as a bunch of opportunities lost.

Like all sane people I was shocked and disgusted by what happened in New York 9/11,however did the American people really believe that represented the birth of terrorism? Didn’t terrorism exist when Irish American’s were providing the IRA with funds to shoot and blow up innocent men, women and children within the British Isle’s? and during the collecting of these funds didn’t the American government turn a blind eye to there collection? I do not condone what Muslim extremists are doing but if you look back in history the Arab world always seems to get the dirty end of the stick. And why is it that the Laddan Family has given the Bush Family Millions of Dollars is Cash on many Occasions? This Whole War Stinks like rotten Bush and Laden Sewer!! Believe me, i love being an American, and am proud to be one too. I have lived here for just over a year now, and have realized just how spoiled most people in the states are for not having experienced living overseas and seeing how the rest of the world lives. In part I do agree with Drew, a lot of the people here are raised from birth to hate a particular group of people (usually the Jewish), but not all of them. Saudi’s are a very social people. In part that makes them very lazy and very very arrogant, but I have had people on the street come up to me and thank me for the job that I am doing. Thay have told me how happy they are that I am here to help them better themselves. The chiefs in my shop asked everyday how my wife was doing for 5 1/2 months until she got here, and after she did get here, they all asked everyday how she liked it here. They all hoped that we did, so that we would stay. I re-iterate again, “IT’S THE FEW WHO SCREW IT UP FOR THE MANY, JUST LIKE IN THE STATES”. All of the people who are saying that we need to bomb Saudi Arabia have no clue what the hell they are talking about.

Everytime something like this happens, I have to admit, my initial reaction is “Go over there, turn the whole Country into a sheet of glass and get our oil”… That is a gut reflex… I’m not ashamed of it, but I also am grateful that my gut response does not dictate actual policy in this country.
I realize of course, after cooling down a bit, that doing what I mentioned above solves absolutely nothing and would kill so many truly innocent people whose only ‘crime’ if you can call it that, is living in a country run by these extremists and terrorists.

Well put. But you also forgot to mention US involvement in Israel. It is quite impossible to argue that Israel is not stealing land and not keeping the Palestinians in concentration camp conditions. Even that is agreed upon by the senate. Yet we still give $5 billion a year in aid to Israel. Exactly the same amount as it costs to keep their army going. Post WW2, there was also US involvement in Vietnam, where over 4 million civilians were killed by allied bombs. That is quite disgusting.

To people outside the United States:
Three thousand people were killed on a single day inside our country. That changed our willingness to sit by and watch those who might potentially harm us. We were and are no longer willing to accept potential threats from sources outside the United States. Saddam Hussein was a murderer who had invaded another country and shown that he was willing to do Americans and our allies harm. If Saddam had ever gotten his hads on the bomb, or VX gas, he may have used it on us, or sold it to someone who would. This was not acceptable to us. We were not willing to wait and see if he already had WMD or could create it. So, we attacked.
It is fair to say now that the intelligence leading up to our invasion of Iraq was wrong. It appears Iraq did not have WMD. Nevertheless, to us, just the threat of being attacked again was enough for us to invade Iraq and depose Saddam.
It may be that we will never find weapons of mass destruction. It is certain though that a man who slaughtered his own people no longer has the capacity to do so. Removing a murderer was reason enough to invade, though not the primary impetus for doing so. For those of you who say, then why don’t we go after Rwanda, or Congo, or North Korea, I would say we would if we could. None of the above mentioned governments has behaved in a way that directly threatens our security.
I think the trial of Saddam Hussein will be an important moment for the world because it will expose in detail what a truly evil man he is. When all the horror he has caused has been exposed, I think many of you on this board will change your opinion about whether or not it was right to go, even if the banner that we were marching under at the time displayed false or misleading pretenses.
Our, alterior motive for going to Iraq was to try and jolt the middle east in to modernity. The middle east is a land of great promise, but the heads of governments there oppress their own people. The presence of US troops has put these governments on notice. Iran, Syria, Lybia and the house of Saud will face increasing pressure from home to broaden the scope of civil rights in their respective countries.
Many fundamentialists in the middle east do not want their world to change, this is The reason that you are seeing things like beheadings in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The pressure to change is mounting. The Saudis will now have to deal directly with the fundamentalists that they help to create through their Wahhabism, their own version of Islam. They will have to deal with fundamentalists and reform, or be removed from power. These are good signs. In a way, Nick Berg & Paul Johnson are martyrs, in the sense that their deaths have forced the Saudis to look internally at problems.
No one wants war. However, selfishly, I would much rather our troops fighting on foreign soil than seeing more buildings tumble to the ground here in the US. For those of you who have been critical of the US invading Iraq, I say, you weren’t attacked on September 11th. This changed the game for us. The vastness of the sea could no longer protect us, so we chose to seek our enemies on their own turf.
History will show that our invasion was the right thing to do. When Saddam goes to trial, the number of critics will begin to dissipate.
The Iraqi people now have a chance at freedom. They haven’t had that chance in 30 years. My God, that alone is worth the price of invasion.
Most of you all do not know how Saddam came to power in Iraq, or what he did when he came.
On Saddam’s first night in power, he gathered together many of his own country’s top politicians and leaders at a lecture hall in Baghdad. The meeting was carried on live TV. In the course of the meeting, Saddam began to call out names of various local and regional leaders in the Audience. The men that were called were escorted in to the street and shot.
He displayed this barbarism on live TV to strike fear in to the hearts of all his countrymen. He wished to say to his fellow Iraqis, “This is how it will be. You will fear me, or you will die.”
He was and is a horrible man. If we never find a drop of VX gas or an ounce of plutonium, it was still worth going. The man was a murderer.
The entire middle east now has an increased chance to be free. If Iraq is a success, other nations will want to follow. The theocracy in Iran and the oligarchy in Saudi Arabia will not exist in their current iterations if Iraq becomes a successful country. If those two giant chips fell in to place, the entire planet could breathe easier and feel safer. Is this not worth going to war for?
Some of you all hate violence, but to live oppressed, brutalized, and without the fundamental aspects of freedom is to not live at all.
I thank God for the leadership and foresight of Tony Blair and George Bush. They understand that the stakes are high, but if we win, which would mean a stable, pluarlistic, tolerant middle east, then the ends are certainly worth the means.
I love Canada, Great Britain, and the United States. There are those of you on this board who claim to have some understanding of history. I say that, if you did, you would cheer the work of American and British soldiers, along with those in the middle east who wish to be free. The middle east has not known peace and freedom for most of its history. At least now it has a chance.

I want to make my thoughts clear and I am sure lots of you agree, whatever opinion you have about the nasty things happening.
We have a few things in common:
we want to live in peace and don’t want to be scared.
We don’t want personally go to war and risk our lifes and leave family friends etc. behind.
NOW, I am not Anti US-American per-se, but I do think that you or your government should change the way to treat terrorism, because hatred causes heatred and so on. So answering the problems and attacks with violence (with good reasons or not) is just causing new violence. And some of the two need to be breaking the cycle otherwise it just goes on and on and worse.
I am Austrian, and Hitler was Austrian too, but I am only 27 and wasn’t there, but I am still embarrassed that the guy was born in Austria, even though he got his power in Germany.
Now Bush is a very dangerous person and I am scared that the whole world just becomes war and hatred. That’s why I am on this page, to shake your guys thoughts and wake up or at least question it a bit more, and don’t elect him again, so this world can become more peaceful again.
Bush is creating a mess, be honest.
And it is not against you americans, we do have a different culture, but it is far above that, I just want to make you think and not create an online fighting.
Please do me the favour and think about the similarities between Hitler and Bush and not only think about it, get information, and then please tell me again I am Anti-American.
We Europeans cannot write to Bush or do anything. The only thing what we can do is to contact you guys and say “PLEASE DON’T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN”.

I don’t think you made it clear about Bush and Hitler. It is a silly comparison, but I think what you are trying to get across is that the German people are good, well natured people, and Hitler came to power because of a wave of hatred which allowed the Germans to take their eye off the ball. Before they knew it, war was the answer. No matter what the intensions, it never works. I am sorry for many of the remarks made in this column, by myself, and others. The freedom of never meeting you people on the internet means we can be this horrible to each other, but in truth, I don’t hate these commentators, but wish they could just take a look at peaceful solutions. I have a daughter. If someone was to kill her intentionally, I would take that other persons life if I could. I know it would be wrong, but I don’t think it would matter. I think I would be weak enough to live with that feeling forever. And so I feel I understand all sides. The problem is, does anyone think that there will come a point when one side says “well, thats about enough deaths, we should stop now”. Of course not. It just breeds more violence. And neither should the American way be seen as a panacea for life’s ills. It isn’t and alot of poeple like their way of life without the promise of turning their land into another Texas. The US needs to be more careful where it treads, for a Dylan Thomas said “as you tread on my dreams”. No offence meant, but there HAS to be a better way than this.

As I stated Friday, “W” is not interested in chasing out dictators from foreign lands and giving people freedom like he loves to claim.
If he was, there’s one 75 miles SE of Florida who’s been there a real long time.
China undisputedly has nuclear weapons— also run by dictatorship. N. Korea, Libya, and Iran (as well as Iraq) are suspected of having nuclear weapons….we haven’t attacked N. Korea lately, Libya hasn’t been bombed in 20 years and Iran is/was a staunch enemy of the US, but, hmmm, we haven’t gone to war with them lately either.
Egypt, Syria, Iran, Libya, and many other countries have or are suspected to have Chemical and Biological Weapons- “WMD’s” as they are known.
The U.S.A. has Nuclear Weapons, and does research on both Biological and Chemical weapons.
Interesting, oh yeah, we are the “good guys”. hmmmmm. Our “friends” in Israel have all three, or are suspected of having all of them. Interesting.
The point I am trying to make, once again, is for people to open their eyes. See what is really happening. Don’t get your news from CNN or Fox. Dig deeper into the news. See what is really behind what is happening.

Iraqi hostage beheaded – report

An Iraqi militant group has beheaded its South Korean hostage, the pan-Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera reported tonight.
The channel said it had received a video tape saying he has been executed.
Kim Sun-il, 33, who worked for a South Korean company supplying the US military in Iraq, was abducted last week.
Al-Jazeera said the execution was carried out by the al-Qaida-linked group Monotheism and Jihad.
Earlier it had been reported that the kidnappers had extended to execution deadline to allow for further negotiations.
I believe in our president I think he is doing the best job that can be done. Honstly I think it would be a mistake for Kerry to win this presidency. He has said that he does not agree with this war and more than likely he would pull the troops out of afghanistan and iraq which would cause thousands of their people to die. My father is in Afghanistan and he says most of the people he has talked to are for the United States help in their government.
I also feel that Bush should pull out the national guard and reserves and send the killers in. I have nothing against national guard, my cousin received a purple heart for fighting for his country in the national guard. I am saying that he wasn’t trained as well in the guard as the active duty soldiers are. If we would have sent in the artillary and bombers we could get this taken care of.

Why is the response to give $4 billion each year to him? Do you not think that this is doing more harm than good to US safety? Do you not think that The Red Cross, The Red cresent, Amnesty, and the UN are right in saying that Palestine is the main recruiting ground for Al Qaeda. After all, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, you said it was wrong. It was, and the response was, I guess, correct. So why is this different in Israel. It, to me, shows a moral inconsistency which therefore make using force hard to justify.

Yes, my husband does work and BTW he is a registered Democrat. My husband provides a very good life for me and our family. I worked as an investment banker but we felt it was better that I stay at home and raise our family. Yes, we send our child to a private parochial school. Why, because we are Catholic and feel that a very good education is a foundation which our child can build on.

If you choose the former, you support the war in Iraq. If you choose the second option, you prefer US troops stay and home while people die. So which option do you choose?
3. If Bush is such and idiot, why did multi-nation NATO release a joint statement of support of the war today? Are they all Bush’s stooges? Do you honestly believe that they are in on the ‘so called’ profiteering, as purported by people on this board and M. Moore?
4. If we aren’t doing a better job in regards to terrorism, why have there been no attacks on US soil in the last 3 years?
5. If you don’t support the war, are you comfortable with the fact that the alternative would mean that Libya, Iran, and Iraq would have continued to develop WMD? By the way, Libya has abandoned their WMD programs, Iran is facing tremendous pressure to do so, and North Korea recently agreed in principle to abandon their weapons programs in exchange for energy aid and security guarantees from the US. Why have these things come about. Because nothing compares to the political pressure of troops at your doorstep.

This is not AN ISSUE FOR LONG TERM PEACE IN THE mIDDLE EAST. If that was the case, people like Ariel Sharon would be removed, and the focus would be on solving the Palestine question. Prior to 1983, when Saddam came to power with US support, Palestine was the destabilising issue. It still is, and so this is not the way to bring peace to the Middle east. Further more, the Arab nations don’t like the US influence in their countries, and indeed, why should they. This is along way away from you, and should be nothing to do with you. For example, Saudi Arabian people have been trying to overthrow their democracy for a while, as it is very rich, but has the poorest and most downtrodden populace of the region. But America support the Royal Family with weapons to keep them in power. The US influence is seen as an invasion, and to be honest, it is. They want you to keep out of their affairs because nothing is done for alltruistic reasons and to pretend it is is just foolish. Like Iraq, it was done for oil, money, and if democracy is our goal here, then why don’t we overthrow the Saudi Royal Family. For that matter why did we reinstate the Kuwaiti government, another dictatorship. There is no altruism here. And I equally don’t think that this invasion has stopped terrorism attacks, do you? There is more terrorism than ever before, and still no Osama. One dodgy old guy, on dialysis in a cave. Here is my guess. He’s already caught, but he is worth more to the States on the run than he is captured. It justifies more killings.
So, if bringing peace to the Middle East is the aim, killing innocent civilians is no way to do it. Solving Israeli attacks will do it, and it won’t be done by sending $4billion a year to them.

They haven’t supported the war. They have supported “the hand over of power to an interim Iraqi government. If NATO had supported it, it would have been done under NATO. They didn’t so you went on it alone in true internationally democratic style. Today NATO approved the hand over of power and the continuation of troops to see the hand over is successful. It was not an endorsement of the war.

I said – Over the passed three years, terrorism attacks have gone up globally by 1400%, from Unesco figures. This was stated as a global response to American Imperialism and heavy handed tactics, and the continuation of Israeli insurgency destabilising the middle east.
You never had terrorism anyway until Sept 11th (bar the previous attack on the WTC). However, your actions are putting the rest of us in danger, as the attacks are on America civilians and their allies whilst they are in other countries. This is how the world sees us, so how do you expect them to react. I know you wouldn’t look kindly on such people if it was the other way around. War is a form of defence not a foreign policy. Any christian country who believes in the word of peace knows that. And if you don’t, then you don’t believe in the words of peace, and are therefore unchristian.
Ultimately, we all want peace in Iraq. Of course we do. But killing people to do it just breeds more violence, and I for one don’t believe that Iraq will be stable for many years. Far more deaths have occured everyday whilst we put sanctions on Iraq and have invaded their soil, than anytime when Saddam was in power alone. Yes, he’s an asshole, and we are all glad he is gone, but not by the killing of the innocents. A bad situation has just been made much worse.
You must have better solutions than “well, we’ll kill you, and destroy that, and that will solve it”. It doesn’t solve it.
I hate Saddam Hussain (as does everybody), and I believe in democracy. But if I had to pull my children out of a building, looking for their limbs, and trying to put their brain back into their skull, or shove their eyes back in their sockets so they can look at them with some dignity, I would not welcome you at all. Who knows, I may believe in terrorism as an answer. What else would I have to lose. My children are dead. And who could blame me. It is all very well saying that such people should be pleased because they are liberated now, but the situation was never as bad as that to warrant such a response. Yes he killed lots of his own people, but then so have we. we have no moral high ground on him at all, and no better alternative to offer them now other than years and years of terrorism. And what was it about anyway. It moves from day to day. First WMD, which they didn’t have, to now being “well, we’ve liberated them”. I am sorry, but most Iraqi’s DON’T feel liberated, and are just more fearful. They are so scared now anyway, that they will say anything you want them to say. Any critisism of Iraq is critisism of ourselves, and we should stop treating war as nothing more than a foreign policy tactic. This war was not about defending ourselves. We attacked them on their soil, unprovoked.

How are you? I hope you are just fine. Yeah, I lost tow grandparents during that heat wave. I am sorry if my answers are miss spelling, but I am French, and so Enlish is not first language.
Yes, My great Aunt, ad my Grandfather both died during that heat wave. They lived in a place called Bourgadouis, near in the Paule, near Carhaix in Bretagne and loved it there. It is just big open fields and forest with local farmer. We had asked them two on many ocasions to come and live with us at either Lyons (where my brother lives), or Paris (where I live), but they would have none of it at any. My grandpa (JP) was a lover of the world outside, and spent his time building dry stones walls. Even at 89, he would not have it any way. Unfortunately, the calcite on the water well had formed a barrier, and had prevented the water from coming through the pipe, but leaked into the rock, and not the tap. They have no phones where they live, and it horrifies me to think how they were able to not contact, but please please please do believe me, they would no had it any other way. They loved the isolation, and the land around them, and knew that they were away from the outside world. That is why they were there. I am so sorry if the heat wave caused so much death, but what could have done. My sister was to visit on many occasions, and they spent christmas at our home in Paris every year. He was a funny man, and laughed at the people who lived in the towns.
As a French person, I am sorry that our countrys are at offence with the other, but nobody here really cares. I am sure that you are a good country, and wish everything that is big around. It is interesting to go back to the origin of this website, and read a few mails.
Lets get a few things straight. Islamist extremists are cleverer than we think, unfortunately. They get maximum exposure for the minimum of casualties by parading them on video being killed, which eventually makes everyone who sees it VERY anti islamist. That is what they want us to feel. Yes, they are bastards. But we have killed lots more of them than they have of us, we just haven’t seen the footage of these individuals. I am sure it won’t be nice (bits of brain, severed arms etc etc)
How much do you think though, that the US troops humiliating prisoners at Abu Gharib prison on video has contributed to this? It is just a question, and does need addressing.
Paul Johnson was building Apache helicopters. Sure, a profession at home, but in Saudi Arabia, isn’t this the risk that people run. Does this make him more of a legitimate target than, say, an oil worker.
The point of this is to point out that we need to look what we are doing here, and the obvious reaction it is provoking. Saudi Arabia IS VERY anti American, because we have supported their corrupt and over powerful regime for too long. I am sort of fed up with our citizens thinking that we are disliked “for no good reason”. They have good reasons for being hateful towards us, and should we not address these instead of answering everything with more bombs and rhetoric? Saudi Arabia is a pure family run dictatorship, hateful to its own people, able to stay in power because of US money and weapons. They are actually very very close to being overthrown, so much do their own citizens want to get rid of their own Royal Family (about 95% of the population hate them, and this is a huge worry for the US – possibly we will have to intervene here if it does to prop up a dictatorship – very embarrassing). Why are we supporting this dictatorship, as well as the one in Kuwait (they too torture their own people), and yet invade Iraq to apparently liberate them and give them democracy. You have to admit, it does stink. It is just not consistent is it.
Some will say it is because Saddam wouldn’t play ball in the oil game, and if that is true, surely the individuals are going to hate us for stealing their own resources and bombing them for it?
If Pauls death appauled us so much, and we want it to stop, we need to get our shit together, and stop bullying this region. If not, then we can expect more. To find solutions in this, we must stop thinking that we are totally innocent here, that we don’t kill their citizens with bombs dropped from far away, that we don’t support dictatorships, that we are not securing their oil for our use. After all, if you walked into a house at the end of your street, just walked in, screwed the wife, took cookies from the cookie jar, took their tv remote control, and came home, you could hardly say “Jes, those barstards from down the road have scratched my car. Christ they make me sick, they are disgusting”. Well, you can say that, but who is going to support you. No-one, and this is why the world doesn’t support us here.
Our foreign policy to the middle east is wrong. We have bought them dictators (Saddam, Saudi Arabis, Bin Laden) and solved their problems with war, which is perpetual, and stated claim to their oil. It is no wonder that they hate us, and wish we would leave, and who can blame them. If someone did that to my country, I would be angry too, and even angrier when the US say “why are they so angry, what have we done?”
These are just questions, but to move this website forward, they need to be intelligently addressed.

I would like to mention one more thing. First, I am not trying to provoke you here at all, and thank you for being the only rational responder on this site. We both want the killing to stop. I assume. It would be silly to think we didn’t. It is just about how much you want it to stop, and that means how far we are prepared to go to get this. I am prepared to accept our obvious blame, and then to re adjust our foreign policy. War is a last option in the defence of our nation, not a first option in our foreign policy. September 11th was what happened BECAUSE of our foreign policy to the Middle East, and did not happen in isolation. I am not a believer in God, Allah or anything like that. Well today I read that the iraqi’s are in charge of their own government now hopefully our troops will be coming home soon.
