Are the Smart-1 pictures out yet? I’m curious about another thing – John Young left a laser reflector on the moon. The McDonald Observatory in Texas shoots it with a laser and gets a return from which a distance is computed. I am aware that they fire many shots before they get a return. Is anyone aware of whether laser shots have been fired at places on the moon where there is not a laser reflector, and whether a return has been observed? The question is whether any aspect of the moon surface may naturally provide a return of the laser – such as from an appropriately fractured rock that may have a naturally reflective surface.
